The Incisal Variation Tool in 4.2 Software

I have to say that this is one of the best tools that Sirona has put in the software since they introduced the Form tool years ago.  This tool allows you to take two anterior restorations and put a bit of anatomy  on the facial surfaces of the restorations.  You can be very subtle or more aggressive with the amount of anatomy by adjusting the slider in the tool menu.

In the case below I was fairly subtle for this case that I was doing off a typodont for a project for our Hands-On Anterior course in Scottsdale.  But if you look at the milled anterior restorations, you can see how the anatomy has been milled in by the software and how nice and realistic the restorations look.

One point to note, I have always done Biogeneric Copy in the anterior for anything more than a single restoration because regular Biogeneric has been so inconsistent for multiple anterior restorations.  However, both of these restorations were designed in Biogeneric and we might be at a point where Biogeneric is a viable technique for multiple anterior restorations in addition to Biogeneric Copy.

What would I like to see next?  I want a tool that allows me to adjust the incisal edges.  Don't overcomplicate it, I want either square or rounded edges.  Even better would be to adjust the mesial and distal edges independent of each other where if the patient is a young male, the user can keep the mesial incisal edge square and the distal rounded.  If the patient is an older male keep mesial and distal square. Finally  a female patient would have the ability to have both the mesial and distal rounded.  Custom proposals that will greatly improve the restorations that we receive from the machine.

Bottom line is the Incisal Variation tool is a winner and huge step in the right direction.  If you want to see a video on how this tool works click HERE to go to our digital library of hundreds of videos!
