Holder for Celtra Duo Crown

When staining and glazing a Celtra Duo crown, I've found that sometimes my assistants have a hard time holding on to them with a locking crown holder, especially on very shallow intaglio crowns.  The other worry is that if they spray, they'll get glaze on the intaglio of the crown and often don't get enough glaze around the margins because of this.

I got a tip from a Dentsply Sirona Consumable rep that has worked great.  We use silicone ear plugs (you can get them on amazon for around $3) and seat the milled crown on the plug.  It's sticky enough that the crown doesn't fall off and it gives you something to hold onto while staining and glazing.  The silicone also blocks out the intaglio from glaze getting under the crown.  After glazing, you just lift it off with a cotton pliers by the contacts and put in the speedfire.  I've been doing this for a few months and my assistants love it.

Nice tip.  Are the silcone ear plugs reusable?

Yes, I got a box of 12 for $3 and I think we've only used 1 or 2

Yes, you can put them in your ears right after and they still work great!

That is the definition of a "pearl".  Thanks Dan, I will be passing that one along when we do our trainings, people are always asking how to make this process easier!

Could you please share a photo of this contraption?
Thank you.

In my opinion, the silicone earplugs work so much better than Model Bloc which is what some of the reps recommend. It doesn't get stuck in the intaglio. You can buy them just about anywhere.

This is glaze only, but should give you an idea.

Sweet!!

Dan. Great idea

I recently had orthodontics with conventional brackets that would cut my lips and cheeks all the time

i found that the same silicone ear plugs serve well as a better replacement for wax.

Brilliant Dan...mutli functional too...Kris can take the extras home and help her tune out the Dog's snoring or mine too when when I forget to put my oral appliance in winking

Gents, I used the silicone helpers today and it worked like a charm !!!

I am so glad you guys share the wealth of knowledge!

Glad to hear! That’s what this community is all about.

Those of us that don’t have a speedfire, is it best to transfer to a firing pad or to use harvest Dental’s paste to support it? I remember this conversation a while back and wanted to refresh my memory. And emax or empress rains I assume?

I wonder if you could use that stuff for crystallizing e.max. But would it be passive (plastic) and stable enough and would it sustain the high temperatures?

I just tried it. It does NOT work. Do NOT attempt

Do you mean you put it in the oven?  It literally is just a holder for Celtra Duo during the stain/glaze process.  The crown needs to be lifted off the silicone material and placed in the oven.  Silicone is not a replacement for refractory putty!

That is correct, for the materials that use refractory putty. Just a reminder that putty should NOT be used for Celta Duo. Just set it on the woven pad.
