Bruxzir vs CEREC Zirconia

Thought it would be interesting to see a side by side of Bruxzir (done at Glidewell) vs an infiltrated CEREC Zirconia.  Both are still quite opaque, but making progress.

This was the original situation in 2013:

I did 4 and 5 with Bruxzir and we did #3 with CEREC Zirconia

Wow Mike, that looks great.  I like #3 better!

Great results like always Mike. I just received my speed fire furnace 4 weeks ago and have a few questions.  After you mill the crown, you then infiltrate with the liquids that you have shown on other threads. Which cycle do you then use?   do you use the oven in drying/sintering mode or straight to sintering?  How much are you prepolishing compared to post polishing? what difference are you seeing when infiltrating the intaglio surface compared to the outside gingival 1/3?

If you infiltrate, you need to run a drying cycle. Intaglio is something Mike is trying out with both color and a fluorescent material. I have used an opaque to block a very dark stump area.

Yes, i'm running the 3rd option in the list which sinters and dries in the same cycle.  It takes anywhere from 26-29 minutes with infiltration.  I have gotten lucky with running the short cycle with infiltration before and i have gotten unluck.  I think it depends on how thick it is.  I just don't take the chance anymore.

Also just a clinical thought about zirconia in general.  I know I have been a proponent and an advocate/spokesperson from the beginning.  This is partly because I have the most experience, but also because i truly believe that zirconia is going to play a big role in what we do in the future.  We have some esthetic limitations at the moment, but we have all worked to improve that with infiltration and very soon the material will start to evolve as well.

I have been successful with many ceramics for a long time, but today was second molar day in my office and I honestly feel like some of these cases cannot be done with e.max.  I look back and I probably had to push e.max a little too hard in these cases before we had zirconia.... now, I really don't know how I could practice without it.  3 of the cases were prepped as much as I felt comfortable and on none of them was the fissure more than .8mm.

So, I guess the point is... if you are thinking about buying the speedfire, I certainly would endorse it because I think it improves your dentistry and clinical outcome to have zirconia as an  option.  With polish only, you can do it just as fast (i'm faster with zirconia now) as glass ceramics.

Just something that was on my mind as I cemented the last one 5 minutes ago...

Any update on picking the base color before the infiltration.

I have used A1, A2, and D3 and am still not getting incisal colors to look like the Vita shades. Gingivals using A3 colorling OK but all three look like bright A1 or maybe A2.

Any more video help or infiltration advice?

Ray

To me the biggest difference here is a dentist-artist versus Walmart dental lab mass production. As I inch closer to adding the zirconia option my research appears to be it takes some skill and technique to make theses look decent.

Mike, what are you using for the infiltration and where do I get it? Thanks in advance.

Ray,

I see the same as you.  We are polishing only but have pretty much quit using As entirely.  Ds look much better in most cases it seems, and some Cs mixed in as well.   I too would be interested to hear Mikes thoughts on go-to base shades.

Any hints, when polishing, to avoid the pearl like iridescence which tends to develop on the surface --- or is that just par for (this) course?

I will post a video hopefully today on infiltration with the vita. The pearl like effect is hard to avoid, but it's much less with infiltration because you get a more translucent effect with the blue when polished

Thanks Mike

Hey, if possible, can you provide a link on this thread (to the video) when you're able to get that uploaded?
